Squeezed onto a narrow lot between the monolithic Baker Sunday school wing of Christ Church and the five story Capital Apartments on New Bern Avenue is Raleigh’s oldest surviving brick building — the State Bank of North Carolina.  When erected in 1813, it was the only structure on this block. In order to save it from demolition when the Baker wing was built, the venerable old building was moved 100 feet to its current location in 1968.

Above is a marker on the Hargett Street side of the Edmisten Building denoting the spot where Judge William Gaston penned the official North Carolina state song “The Old North State Forever”. Visible in the reflection is the Odd Fellows Building.

The Beehive Collective is a local non profit that’s mission “is to pollinate community giving in Raleigh and inspire young women to lead.” As part of that mission, the Collective hosted The Bee Ball: A Second Chance Prom. The event, held at The Berkeley Café, appeared to be a stunning success; filling the Café to near overflowing with a good time had by all.
