Raleigh’s Capital Apartments

At five stories, the Capital Apartments was Raleigh’s first high-rise apartment building. It was constructed in 1917 in yellow brick with Craftsman Style detailing, and features a U-shaped configuration common in modern apartment buildings of the time. This arrangement allowed for maximum light and air into every apartment, each of which also has a recessed porch or balcony.

The Occidental Life Insurance Building

Unlike many of Raleigh’s mid-twentieth century modernist structures, the Occidental Life Insurance Building has escaped the wrecker’s ball. Erected as the corporate headquarters of the Occidental Life Insurance Comapany of North Carolina in 1956, this iconic Internationalist style building was designed by renowned Raleigh architect Leif Valand (with Kemp, Bunch and Jackson of Jacksonville, Florida).
