Yarborough House, Raleigh, N.C.
I love the message on this postcard — “Bunk here tonight. A fairly good hotel.” Actually the famed Yarborough House was Raleigh’s premier lodging and social gathering spot from its establishment in the 1850s until its destruction by fire in 1928.
Apparently, ‘M’ never mailed this card.
The image seen here was based on a photo in the H.H. Brimley photo Collection in the N.C. State Archives.
Are there any Goodnight Raleigh readers who happen to know where this hotel once stood, and what occupies the site today?

The Yarborough HOuse, stood where the present “The Hudson”…and the former Hudson Belks Dept store on Fayetteville street directly across the street from the Wake Co. Courthouse.

The Yarborough House was way before my time, but I know it was on Fayetteville Street, am pretty sure it was on the spot occupied by the old Hudson-Belk dept. store. WTVD-TV has offices in that building, now called The Hudson, along with condos.

It burned in 1928 and was replaced with other buildings. Read about it here: http://www.newraleigh.com/articles/archive/yarborough-house/

The date threw me off for a second. Realized it was 1907 rather than 2007!

The NC Women’s Suffrage Association had its offices in the Yarborough Hotel, which served as a convenient base for lobbying the legislature to ratify the 19th Amendment to the US Constitution recognizing women’s right to vote. (Tennessee became the 36th state to ratify in 1920, putting the amendment over the top.) At that time, their efforts came to naught. The amendment was not ratified by the NCGA until 1971. NC was spared the ignominy of being the last to ratify by Mississippi, which finally ratified in 1984.

That’s so funny! He was honest. Not many reviews read that way. And how interesting to the history of the building that Jennifer added int he comments!
