Raleigh’s Capital Apartments
At five stories, the Capital Apartments was Raleigh’s first high-rise apartment building. It was constructed in 1917 in yellow brick with Craftsman Style detailing, and features a U-shaped configuration common in modern apartment buildings of the time. This arrangement allowed for maximum light and air into every apartment, each of which also has a recessed porch or balcony.Â

Am getting down south some more now. there seems to be more work here. will stop soon I think when we get out of these mountains. am enjoying myself seeing the country. hope you all are well. will write when we stop.
Lizzie
While it is doubtful Lizzie actually stayed at the Capital Apartments during her brief stay in Raleigh in 1921, she was apparently impressed enough with the new high rise to send her folks up north a postcard of it.
“Flashback Friday” is a weekly feature of Goodnight, Raleigh! in which we showcase vintage postcards depicting our historic capital city. We hope you enjoy this week end treat!

Thanks for the post. I walk past the building often. Nice to learn more about it.

Capital Apartments is my favorite vintage Raleigh apartment building. Several of my friends have lived there over the years. It has beautiful Craftsman interiors, though unhappily, the original dark-stained woodwork was painted over years ago. The building is located at the corner of Blount St. and Newbern Ave.

Thanks for sharing, info I probably would’ve never found out about otherwise.

I lived in the Cap Apts for a few years back in the mid-90s. Really an eclectic group of people. Often folks would come home from work and leave their doors open and the neighbors would stop by to chit chat and have a cocktail or glass of wine.
The building was owned by Roland Gammon at that time. He was getting the Cotton Mill project going about the time I moved to Savannah, Ga in 1996. I moved into a building that could’ve been the big brother of the Capital – same U-shape, but 8-stories with a different design scheme. More beaux arts-y.
Anyway, my wife and I loved our time there back when downtown was dead after 5:00. Thanks for the mini-profile.

Best effing apartment I ever lived…rivals my current hood: Westover…boy do I miss when Slims was a short walk down the street (and the only bar besides the Sheraton where we’d watch baseball with the Southwest pilots and flight attendants)

My wife and I lived there in 1990. Our first place together. It was very awesome. It is very cool. I now work about 200 yards from there.
