Do Hookah Bars Have an Uncertain Future?

Sometime over the weekend, the lone Hillsborough Street hookah bar-Marrakesh Cafe- closed its doors with a sign indicating that Shakedown Street is set to replace it. The possible factors leading to its demise aren’t few and far between: a decline in business on Hillsborough Street since roundabout construction, the looming loss of the ability to sell food with the smoking ban, and increased local competition.

The Oak Leaf Light Towers Preview

It looks like someone forgot to turn the power off to one of the towers on the City Plaza site. This was the first time I’ve seen any splash of color on the still under construction public art piece. From what I recently learned, this is but a pale shadow of what these 50+ ft. towers are capable of.

Emerging Artist – Megan Gulledge

Recently I caught up with Megan Gulledge to discuss her upcoming show “Love Varies” at 101 Café, opening this First Friday. In a town where every other bar or restaurant downtown tries to double as an art gallery, artists’ works often seem to blur together, and it’s rare to find one who really stands out from the crowd. Megan is definitely an emerging artist to take notice of.
