Just noticed this post–I actually worked in Park Shops for a few months after the renovations were completed and I wanted to say how incredible a job they did. Park Shops pre-renovation was nothing short of terrible–bad floorplans, bad traffic patterns, offices shoehorned into places they weren’t designed for, haphazardly divided high bay areas, and a general lack of maintenance combined with some looming structural issues caused the building to nearly be demolished. Thankfully they relented, and the completed building really is beautiful. The third floor was completely re-created and gets lots of light from the re-glassed clerestory windows, the main level was repartitioned into classrooms and offices and the lead/asbestos were stripped from the rafters and the aged natural wood allowed to show through, the concrete floors were polished, and (with the exception of a cluster of windowless offices in the center of mass of the east wing) it’s a very pleasant, attractive place to work, study, or go to class. Plus they did a great job with the exterior, using the original window frames but replacing the frosted glass with clear panes and fitting an attractive new metal roof, plus adding a small glass addition to the back to serve as a “patio” of sorts for the coffee shop in the basement. It’s really worth checking out.
