Moving Two Giant Houses
These two houses are currently located on Peace Street, across from Peace College. They are in the process of being moved, but I don’t know where their final destination is.
It is somewhat ironic that the likelihood of a house being moved from its original location in order to preserve it is directly proportional to how old it is and how large it is–two factors that make moing them much more difficult to do.

I’m glad to see them preserved though. Especially the first one with that gazebo-like porch. Wish I could live there!

Moving these houses is a part of the ambitious Blount Street Commons project, now underway in the area bounded by Wilmington, Peace, Person and North Streets. The gray house will be turned around and moved to face Blount St @ the corner of Peace. (The ugly state office building now occupying that site is being demolished). The green house will be moved to the 400 block of N. Person street next to 2 houses already moved there from Peace St.
What is going to be a REALY BIG move is the relocation of the Southern classic ca 1875 Merrimon-Wynnne house on Wilmington St, across from the Albemarle Bldg. It will be moved in July to a double lot @ the corner of Blount and Polk Streets. (You gotta get some pix of this move, John!) Sadly some of the 100+ year old oaks now in the house’s yard will be lost…
Once all the moving is complete, that whole side of Wilmington St from Peace to Polk will be occupied by townhouse-like structures.

The first two Peace St houses were moved from across the Krispy Kreme to the 400 block of N. Person St back in December. (Refer to the Dec. 1 N&O article below.) I don’t know if any additional Peace St houses will be moved, although there is a very nice one near the corner of Wilmington and Polk that is scheduled to make the move to Blount St this summer, I think.
