Goodnight Raleigh - a look at the art, architecture, history, and people of the city at night

Opening August 2nd: Ian F.G. Dunn’s Exhibit, Dead Dads

Ian F.G. Dunn is one of the most talented photographers out there today. This Friday is the opening of his show at Flanders Gallery, featuring portraits and stories of sons who have lost their fathers.

Spanning subjects in architecture, portraiture, and patterns in every day life, Ian brings a unique look at the world around us. As long as I’ve known him, he’s been an enthusiast for the photography of years past. Although possessing a mastery of the digital medium, his passion is for film, and the warmth and depth only it can provide.

The show runs from August 2nd until August 30th, but I recommend seeing it during the opening on First Friday.

Dunn is a founding member of Film9 Collective, a group of artists devoted to the process and preservation of analog photography. Each image is developed as a silver gelatin print by the artist’s own hand in a darkroom. Dunn and the Film9Collective believes that “nothing compares to the tangible relationship one forms with their images in the darkroom.” The care taken in developing the prints is evident within Dunn’s portraits, and it is through the process that Dunn pays tribute to the important and complex relationships between sons and their fathers.
