Is that dog food I smell ? No, it’s the Cargill soybean processing plant on S. Blount St. Most people I know still call it the Purina plant. Drive by on a hot day and you won’t be disappointed by the smell.

I have always loved the Purina plant, belching clouds of steam and ever redolent of cooked soybean mash. Its massive silos, once painted in Purina’s trademark giant red and white checker-board pattern, heralded the return to Raleigh from a family trip to the beach when I was a kid.

I never forget this smell. I used to deal with this gag inducing odor on the way to Fuller Elementary school during the 70’s

I miss the red and white checkerboard paint of the Ralston Purina Plant. Those silos stood there like the gateway to the city from the South. I always marveled at them going out on an afternoon trip to Par Golf, The Charles Store, the Raleigh Municipal Airport, and of course The Planter’s Peanut Store. http://raleighfirehistory.org/photos/fp-slides/slides/1970s-fire-ext-04.html
