Goodnight Raleigh - a look at the art, architecture, history, and people of the city at night

Morning View 060911

Missed my post last Wed. due to a dentist appointment. Went by Walnut Terrace this AM in the hopes of getting some interesting images of the demolition. Even I have my limits as to where I’ll go.

Did a quick web search on the Walnut Terrace remake and it’s pretty interesting -

Demolition crews soon will begin tearing down the crime-ridden Walnut Terrace housing project on the south side of downtown Raleigh, even though federal funding for redevelopment has not been approved.
The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development has rejected the Raleigh Housing Authority’s request for $22 million in Hope VI grants four times. Hope VI is a program in which communities are granted money to redevelop severely distressed public housing projects across the country.

Its a bit disappointing that the HOPE VI grant was denied, but what is more unfortunate I think is that there are no plans to improve the street network. Connecting, or at least making arrangements to do so in the future, the grid across S. Wilmington Street would be smart. It would improve walkability and hopefully provide a framework for urban (as opposed to suburban) development.
