Goodnight Raleigh - a look at the art, architecture, history, and people of the city at night

Shaw University, Raleigh, N.C.

Our Flashback Friday postcard this week features an early view of the campus of Shaw University. The scene depicted is at the corner of Wilmington and South streets. Seen in this view are, left to right, Estey Hall, Mansion House and Shaw Hall.

This is a hand-tinted, “divided back” card, and dates from around 1907-1910.

Sackett & Wilhelms Corp., New York and Brooklyn. Famous Superior Quality Throught the World.

Of the three structures seen in this view, only Estey Hall remains today. It was designed by G.S.H. Appleget in 1874 and underwent and extensive restoration about ten years ago. Appleget was also the architect of several other buildings in Raleigh in the 1870s, including the well-known Heck-Andrews house on Blount Street, the Andrews-Duncan house across the street, and the three flamboyant spec houses built by Col. Heck in the Oakwood neighborhood.
