Goodnight Raleigh - a look at the art, architecture, history, and people of the city at night

Raleigh’s Fabled Fayetteville Street

This postcard depicts Fayetteville St.  — as I remember it — the mid 1960s. And of course, back then my trusty Kodak Instamatic was always in tow.

Later, in the late 1970s, Fayetteville St. was transformed into the Fayetteville St. Mall Happily, though, in the wake of that woefully misguided experiment in urban renwal, ‘North Carolina’s Main Street’ was restored in 2005.

Unfortunately, there is no personal message on the back of the postard. But there is this bit of info:

Raleigh, North Carolina
“Capital of North Carolina”
Looking down busy Fayetteville St. towards the State Capitol Building.

And while we don’t usually offer a ‘double’ post for Flashback Friday, just for fun this time,  here’s a view of the same block of Fayetteville St. from a 1907 post card.

“Flashback Friday” is a weekly feature of Goodnight, Raleigh! in which we showcase vintage postcards depicting our historic capital city. We hope you enjoy this week end treat!
