Goodnight Raleigh - a look at the art, architecture, history, and people of the city at night

Bike to Work Week Kicks Off May 14th

Bike to Work Week 2010 kicks off Friday, May 14th from 3-6PM at Marbles Kids Museum on Moore Square. The event will host a kids bike rodeo, a giveaway of kids helmets, a Cycling and Environmental Expo, and a group ride through Raleigh at 6PM.

The event is part of the national Bike To Work Week, which is May 17th through May 21st. It is being sponsored locally by GoTriangle and the Capital Area Metropolitan Planning Organization.

Biking to work is a great way to start the work day. Instead of waiting for your morning cup of coffee to move you into productivity mode, you arrive with an endorphin high and a strong sense of mental clarity. The ride home is equally satisfying–no waiting in rush hour traffic navigating through a sea of automobiles.

Maybe you’re thinking: “I work in RTP and live in Raleigh, there’s no way I can bike to work!” Oh, but you can! You can take Hillsborough Street to the Greenway by Meredith College, cross the Reedy Creek Bridge, cycle through the grounds of the Art Museum, and take the Reedy Creek trail all the way to the airport. For some reason Google Maps won’t allow the embedding of bicycle maps, but I encourage you to explore the routes and check it out for yourself.

I used to work in RTP and made the trek on many occasions. If you plan on making a long journey to work, it’s a good idea to do a dry run. If you’ve never done it, try going on a weekend first.

Bike to Work Week in Raleigh ends on Friday with a cyclists’ social at Porter’s Tavern on Hillsborough Street on May 21st at 5:30PM. After the social, there will be a free screening of the Triplets of Belleville at the NC State Theater at Witherspoon Hall.

Apparently, Google does allow for the embedding of bike maps as of a few weeks ago. Seems like they pushed through many enhancements. But I still cant really figure out how you are supposed to do that use.In your map, you did toggle the “show bicycle” paths feature, which, stops at the boundaries of Umstead, etc.

Re: the saddlebag sticker – you’re welcome! Following traffic laws, not riding three abreast blocking the road, and generally ditching the smug self-righteousness most cyclists seem to have will also go a long way toward keeping me from scraping you off my bumper.
