Goodnight Raleigh - a look at the art, architecture, history, and people of the city at night

Raleigh Calling, Installment Three: ‘More than just a Pretty Facade’

Welcome to another installment of our cell phone photo series, “Raleigh Calling.” See if you can guess which building in the heart of downtown Raleigh is depicted in the slightly distorted image shown above as well as answer a bit of trivia. As always, winners will be rewarded for correct answers.

If you are among the first three people to correctly identify this building and answer one of the following questions you will receive a matted print of this beautiful photo.

- What famous 19th century historical Raleigh map does this building appear on?
- What popular restaurant currently occupies the ground floor?
- What other uses has this building seen other than a furniture store?

Good luck!

Used to have the Upstairs Restaurant didn’t it? Great little place, too bad they closed. Loved the little old ladies that worked there.

Thanks to everyone for checking out the post and guessing. Yes, this is the Heilig-Levine building, which currently houses Sitti on the ground floor and can be seen on the 1872 Drie map of Raleigh–aka the Bird’s Eye View. The building is at the corner of Hargett and Wilmington Streets. Besides being the Heilig-Levine furniture store for many years, it was also a grocery store, a wholesale store, and a print shop. And for most of the late 19th century, it was the Central Hotel. If anyone asks, I had all this knowledge in my head, with no help from Raleigh Boy. :)

Congrats to Juan, Smythe, Ben, Chris, and B. Cusick. You are the winners of a print of this photo. The Editors will be in touch with you about where to send your prize.

Thanks again everybody.

Ben
