Daniel the Sketch Artist
We first brought you the brief story of Daniel Schooley a year ago, as the sketch artist that hangs out on Fayetteville Street. At that time I didn’t mention he was homeless, as he had requested that I not mention it.
Since then, Bob Geary wrote a fantastic piece on homelessness in Raleigh, in which Daniel was featured. In the article, Daniel mentions that he is caught in strange place. Not having drug or alcohol problems, he doesn’t fit the profile of the person that shelters are set up to provide assistance to.
He was a bit less optimistic about the future in our more recent meeting. He had been robbed of many of his posessions not long ago (including his art supplies) and hadn’t sold any of his drawings in a long while. He was also hit with a panhandling citation by the RPD, despite the fact he doesn’t ask passersby for money. He was talking of getting a bus ticket to Florida, as he’s become disillusioned with Raleigh in the past few months.
In the meantime, he continues to sell his drawings to get by. At twenty dollars apiece, it’s quite a bargain for a downtown perspective as a downtown resident sees it.

Where on Fayetteville Street is he usually? I’d buy a couple and get them framed. Love unique art.

i would like you all to know that Daniel is not the victim he protrays himself to be. He may have been robbed of his art supplies or may have sold them for all I know….the fact is he is the same homeless man who stated in the Indy’s article that no one has presented the 10 year plan to end homelessness to him and no one has offered him a hand up…or did he mean another hand out; which would constitute that panhandling citation.
He is a typical homeless person and it is sad that he cant face the reality to realizz that much about his person.
Another one of his internet panhandling schemes…Bravo Daniel

For Michael,
No matter what his story is, he does not have a home like we are fortunate enough to have and NONE of us can possibly have any idea what we would do in a similar situation if we had to survive on the streets.
I do not know his story, but I do see a human being who is down on his luck in one of the worst periods of our history. Have a heart.
“He is a typical homeless person…” wow. just wow.
It is apparent you are truly an informed and intelligent individual to be able to reference the connection between this particular homeless man and the one from the Indy article. I only wish that people like yourself could find the courage and strength to let go of your cynical view of this portion of our community and do something positive to help. You never know what good things could come into your life if you open your heart and let go of some of your hostility and anger.
I would kindly recommend to a therapist soon and find out why you are such a heartless jerk.

to michael — i am not scamming anyone. i don’t know you and i don’t care for your opinion. i am NOT SCAMMING anyone. if u were in my shoes you would be doing the same thing. i draw for a living — have been for five years. times and the economy are tough on everyone. i can’t make it to the shelter everyday to get cleaned up. i dont have any clothes and i dont have time to deal with ignorant people like yourself who see themselves as better than me. so there you have it.
