Goodnight, Raleigh! - a look at the art, architecture, history, and people of the city at night

The Little BB&T Building

This modest BB&T branch is located on the corner of Oberlin Road and Hillsborough Street. It was built in 1962 by the firm of F. Carter Williams. An effort was made to preserve the existing large trees as well as blend in with the residential nature of the area.

Are you sure it’s Carter Williams, and not Milton Small?

No effort was made to preserve the Joe Cox sculpture they yanked off of the end of the building when they stuck in an ATM.

According to Elizabeth Waugh’s Raleigh History book, it was in fact Carter Williams’s firm — although it was his brother Turner that designed it.

Richard B.– Yes, I remember very well when the Joe Cox colored glass wall sculpture was ungraciously removed. I commented to Joe soon after: “Joe, why would the bank trash that beautiful piece of art?” To which Joe, in his inimitable nonchalant way, replied: “Well, I guess they needed the space to pass money through the wall.”

Anyone have any pictures of the artwork that used to be there?
