The Best Kept Secret in Indian Cuisine: Laziz Biryani Corner

In the past week I’ve found that I’ve recommended my favorite Indian restaurant to at the least 10 separate people, so I figured that the next time I stopped by for dinner I’d bring my camera and spend some time talking to the staff.

From left to right: Salman, Abdul, Aisha, Sultana, and Mariam (note the 102 Sanitation Grade on the wall)

Laziz Biryani Corner has been in business for around a year or so. It’s a complete family-run operation out of the back corner of GoPaks Bazaar on Hillsborough St., next to I Love NY Pizza. Yes, it is a restaurant run out of a convenience store, but the meals you get are always of the greatest quality and taste as well as at a fantastic price.

When asked about his family-operated restaurant, Salman had this to say:

When a family runs a business, of course they are going to put their heart and soul in to it–but what makes it different here is that my mom cooks it. You can tell the difference between home made, and commerically prepared meals.  Even in the local India/Pakistan community, everyone knows her for her cooking and the meals she prepared other restaurants.

What initially impressed me with Laziz Biryani Corner was the vegetarian selection–but they have full and diverse menus that will satisfy carnivores as well. Additionally, every day they offer special combo platters with two meal options, basmati rice, naan, and a salad for between 6 and 7 dollars (both vegetarian and non-vegetarian).

You can pay several times the price of the entreés here at another South Asian restaurant, but you’re paying for the the experience. If you’re looking for great tasting Indian/Pakistani food without the fluff–give this place a try. I promise you won’t be disappointed.

They also offer full service catering in addition to serving lunch and dinner. You can contact them through the information below:

Wow, they have come a long way since I first ate there. Have they only been in business for a year? I know I ate their while I was still a student at State, which was almost 2 years ago. They had just opened then, although they may have closed and reopened since, because the pictures show a very different place from what I remember.

Back then it didn’t look this nice: it literally was a stove like you would find in a home and a couple of booths. I had no idea what I ordered. I just pointed and let the lady by the stove pretty much pick out what I ate. It was all wonderful and incredibly cheap. I will certainly need to revisit.

Thanks for reminding me about this place John.

Hey Mark – yes, they officially opened in the beginning of March last year. The restaurant you were thinking of was also an Indian restaurant, but was operated by different owners and closed two years ago.

I certainly recommend revisiting.

Finally, some recognition. I heart the “LBC” and often sell it to skeptics as Raleigh’s premiere bodegga fare. Everything is fresh, portions are massive, and they do carry out. A very nice family run establishment…don’t forget to tip the beautiful women serving delicious food!

Thanks for puttin’ it out there John.

wOw!! Mariam & Aisha.. so this is the store you were talking about when we spoke last time!! I’d love to come to your store on day. I still remember how you mentioned to me long time ago that you love your store and being there! I’m deeply impressed!

This is the best Indian restaurant I have ever tried. I recommend everyone to visit at least once. I will do my Wedding Catering in future from here! The food is mouth watering! It’s hard to find the real taste, but if you are looking for the real taste please visit LBC!
**Customer service is very good, and quick **

I’ve been meaning to check this place out. I could tell it had the potential to be really special but I don’t eat out very often and it didn’t look like the kind of place my folks would dig!

But maybe I should get them over there.

I know I’ll be eating there soon.

Thanks so much for the review and photos.

Thanks so much for covering this John. We LOVE Indian, but had never heard of this place – we will definitely be trying it out, and soon!

GoPaaks!

Great place to grab a tallboy to get me through some of those long night classes across the street. Never tried the food though, now I might.

This place is excellently run! I have never tried the food, but after many nights of working late at JimmyJohns, I would stop in for a case of bush light and a chat with Abdul. Great people! I have always been curious about the food… just dont ever get there at the right times…. =(

Great find, thanks for sharing! Convenience stores and gas stations often have the hidden gems of the ethnic food world. I have shared this post with my friends and I will be sure to get over there soon. I am sad this place did not exist while I was student.

For other good vegetarian Indian food, I would recommend Tower Indian in Cary. For non-vegetarian Indian, Sitar India Palace just opened a new location in Durham and boy was it good. Saffron in Morrisville is also quality.

Had lunch there this afternoon. The food, service and price point was 100%. The woman behind the counter asked how I heard about the restaurant. Of course I told her that I heard about it via Goonight, Raleigh! She gave me a side dish to try for free and when I went up to get a drink refill, she remembered my name and prepared another sample plate for me to try, also for free. I had to get it to go because I was so full, I couldn’t eat another thing!

Thanks for sharing this one, John. I’ll be going back regularly.

I just finished a take out lunch. Food was phenomenal, the ladies could not have been more sweet. I love Indian food but not being all that familiar with Pakistani food I had lots of questions about different dishes. They explained them and let me try them, all were really good. This is gem of a spot and a wonderful value. Keep up the great work girls!

Okay, I’m bookmarking this link for future reference! I LOVE Indian food, but most of the places I’ve tried around here have one thing in common: I always leave hungry. And for what I’m spending, I don’t think I should leave hungry.

I will most definitely put this on my list of places to check out as soon as possible!

Glad to hear such good things about his place. I remember reading about them in the N&O sometime last summer or fall.

We went to eat here last week after reading this article. While I think the food was reasonably good; especially for the price – it was certainly far from the best offerings available in the Triangle. We found the staff to be friendly and I also noticed they say their menu is all halal. I would definitely go back but its not quite as great as this article says it is.

Like John, I’ve been recommending LBC to all my friends as among the best Southeast Asian food I’ve had in Raleigh. They’ve only had one or two misses – ever – in my book, and that’s after sampling most of their menu, repeatedly. Whenever the wife and I need cheering up or a great meal and don’t have the the time to cook, we’re placing a call to LBC. Egglplant dish (yum). Goat biryani (double yum). One caveat: this is really a great place if you like spicy food. If you tend to favor milder flavors, then the offerings will be a bit slimmer. On the other hand, their Mango lassi makes everything better, even and especially a mouth full of fire.

Finally made it to this place tonight for dinner. We had the chicken biryani, lamb curry, and a sample of another chicken dish that they threw in for free. The food was perfectly prepared and delicious. I’ll be back, soon.

I remember reading LBC in the news and observer last week, great review! This place is really amazing. They’ve recently started these potatoe or chicken-stuffed breads that are hand made, and I love them! I think they have picked up from when they opened. Sucks that the construction is making a mess around that place, but it doesn’t stop people to still come to this place and is definitely worth it!
