Goodnight Raleigh - a look at the art, architecture, history, and people of the city at night

College Night at Buckhead Saloon

Every Wednesday is College Night at Buckhead Saloon and it could easily be the best deal and the best night out in town for students. There’s no cover charge before 10:30 and the drink specials can’t be beat–$1.50 well drinks and $2.00 drafts. When you factor in free hot dogs/hamburgers and free limo or bus rides, you’ve got all the ingredients of a five star night for a one star budget.

College Night has been a part of Buckhead Saloon since it officially opened in ’07 (previously Jillian’s). The place occupies a very large plot of land on West Street and all of that space doesn’t go to waste. On any given Wednesday the crowd ranges from between 800-1000 people. I’m hard pressed to think of any other venue downtown that comes close to a crowd of this size on a weekly basis.

I counted four separate bars throughout the establishment (including one outside on the patio). With this many bartenders, you’re rarely in a situation where you have to elbow your way through a crowd or having to waive your arms to get the bartender’s attention.

Pictured above is Bucky, the official bar mascot. He (or she) is frequently found surrounded by a throng of pretty ladies or dancing on the bar shaking his tail.

One of the most unique features of Buckhead is the fact that they have attendants for both the mens and ladies restrooms. In addition to being friendly and handing you a paper towel after washing up, they keep an eye on the place to ensure it stays clean and orderly. Richard is seen above taking a quick break between chatting it up with folks passing by.

Several years ago JD (pictured above) and I worked together at the restaurant where I tended bar. When asked about Buckhead Saloon, he had the following to say:

Buckhead Saloon is great – Hands down I love this place. Whether you want to go out with your friends to dance or if you want to just chill in the lounge and play pool and relax on the couches it’s a great place to be. This place is amazing because it appeals to everybody who likes to go out and party. I go every Wednesday for college night and I would recommend it to anybody new to the area.

College Night draws an enormous crowd every Wednesday evening, but the party doesn’t really begin to get started until around 11:30 or midnight. Bring your friends and your dancing shoes–there’s a DJ spinning a wide selection of grooves ranging from 80s, top 40, to hip-hop and dance. For the fun, crowd, drink prices and vibe, College Night is a weekly event that’s hard to beat for the early 20s crowd.
