We first brought you the brief story of Daniel Schooley a year ago, as the sketch artist that hangs out on Fayetteville Street. At that time I didn’t mention he was homeless, as he had requested that I not mention it.

Since then, Bob Geary wrote a fantastic piece on homelessness in Raleigh, in which Daniel was featured. In the article, Daniel mentions that he is caught in strange place. Not having drug or alcohol problems, he doesn’t fit the profile of the person that shelters are set up to provide assistance to.

A Slow Day at City Market

Although the heyday of Raleigh’s City Market had been in decline for years before I snapped this photo on a slow day in the mid-1970s, it continued to serve downtown Raleigh as an open air produce venue for the remainder of that decade. Read more »

Are We Saying Goodbye to the Wilmont?

On Friday, residents of the Hillsborough Street landmark The Wilmont learned they have 30 days to move out or face eviction proceedings. A tenant filed a complaint with the city about a hole in the ceiling, and series of inspections and investigations followed. City Council then passed on ordinance declaring it unfit for human habitation.
