Goodnight Raleigh - a look at the art, architecture, history, and people of the city at night

Bike First Friday Strikes Again!

Group photo at Rebus Works!

Well, another perfectly good month has come about. What better way to celebrate it than to bike downtown in above average seasonal weather, get free drinks and snacks (we bikers are often referred to as “the locusts”), and see some Goodnight, Raleigh! action at one of the local galleries?

Our first stop, as (almost) always, was FM Goods, on Glenwood. They always have the coolest shoes for sale, as well as free beverages. This month was no exception, and we got the bonus of free barbeque sandwiches.

First Friday Recap (December 5)

As it is with every first friday of each month, a group of bikers numbering as few as 15, up to a rumored 50 or more, meet at the belltower at 7pm to ride around downtown to check out the new exhibits at the art galleries. The path is never constant, but there are a few galleries that we’ve always hit: FM Goods, DesignBox, Rebusworks, Lump, Artspace, The Fish Market, and the Morning Times. This month, we checked out some of the usual suspects, as well as a newly opened gallery on Capital Boulevard: Adam Peele Studio and Gallery.

The newest gallery to open downtown, and by far one of the coolest, is Adam Peele Gallery and Studio. It’s located on Capital Boulevard, just north of where McDowell Street turns into Capital. It had to be one of the coolest spaces we’ve visited on a First Friday ride. Connected to the gallery space pictured above is Adam’s studio, where he sells merchandise and does his work. Check it out!

It’s Been a Good Week for Art

This past week had a lot of really cool stuff going on – we’ll start with Wednesday. Over at the College of Design at NC State, award winning photojournalist David Evans stopped by to give a lecture about his experiences with photography, philanthropy, and documenting life. According to the College of Design’s DESIGNlife News site:

Award-winning photographer David Evans has captured images from around the world while on assignment for clients like National Geographic Society, Discovery Channel, China Foto Press, and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

David, a 1984 graduate of NC State’s College of Design, has worked in a variety of executive creative positions on three continents. He has garnered awards for design, creative direction, art direction, motion graphics, branding, and other endeavors. As Creative Director for National Geographic Television (NGT), he played a key role in the global launch of the National Geographic Channel and served as director of the NGT photography operations. David still acts as Executive Producer for the occasional film, but mainly focuses on his career as an independent documentary photographer.

International corporations that include National Geographic, National Geographic Traveler, USA Today, Time/CNN, The Washington Post, Discovery Channel, BBC, and IBM have published David’s images.

The show will be up at the College of Design’s Brooks Hall from November 3 – November 30. For more information about David Evans, visit his web site.
