It’s incredibly easy to overlook as a Raleigh resident, but the Greek Revival style State Capitol is one of the most remarkable gems of North Carolina architecture.

Rather than try to explain in any level of detail the significance of the State Capitol or Union Square, I encourage you to read Reminiscences of a Raleigh Boy, Part 2: The Center of Town.

the capitol, along with dorton arena, are two very important precedents in architecture, and both tend to show north carolina’s (at the time) pushes to place itself in the nation, and display where it was planning on going. the masonry work of david paton make it quite revolutionary for it’s time. amazing, amazing building.
