I’m not sure what used to be here. The assortment of random objects inside is quite bizarre and doesn’t offer many clues.

Hey, we’ve been inside that building too! We researched it a bit afterwards, and apparently it was a “Broom & Mattress” factory for a school for the blind located nearby. (there is an old dorm nearby) But we couldn’t find anything about a “mechanical shop” or x-ray gear, or all the gas heat + electricity still being on…you know anything else about this?
Also, we’ve been looking at an abandoned building on the corner of Hillsborough St. and W. Morgan St., we can’t find anything on it. We were hoping you might have some information. (Its right to the left of the picture of the “Royal Food Mart” and “Phoenix Tattoo” somewhere on this blog).
Anyway, thanks, and great site!

The building at Hillsboro/Morgan is the old Staudt Bakery. The Staudts began operating a bakery in Raleigh in the 1910s. This building was put up ca. 1940 and was very “modern” for its time. (It’s been vacant for decades.) The Staudt family home, a substantial brick house, stood up on the corner @ Hillsboro St. where a small parking lot is now. It was demolished in the late 1970s when when Morgan St was converted to one-way and the traffic connector put in, usurping the old Harrison Ave., which once occupied this route. You can still see a small section of Harrison Ave. down by the tracks at Charlie Goodnight’s building (which was originally built as an ice plant and icecream factory BTW).
How did you get in here if it was locked…id like to contact the person with keys if need be..
as always…good article!

A friend and I broke into the Broom & Mattress factory not too long before John Morris came by and snapped the pictures. At that time it was owned by the state. There was running water, working light fixtures, and tons of heat emanating from the central boiler room. It appeared to have been subdivided with one half occupied by some (fairly recent) appliance repair shop, and the other filled with lots of old medical equipment and records, along with a machine shop. We couldn’t find any records of other businesses at that address.
