Patrolling The Streets On A Segway

So yesterday was the first time I’ve ever noticed the RPD out on Segway patrol. I’ve documented Officer Keen previously on this blog on bicycle patrol as well as on equestrian patrol. When asked how long the RPD has been patrolling on Segways, I was told that the department has had been for a few years now. Have I just not noticed them? Have they been out on these for a while now?

I’ve noticed them around for a couple years now. I think they’re only out on those things at night and usually on Glenwood South. At least thats the only place I’ve seen them.
These things still make me laugh. Its an awkward feeling laughing at cops. Usually they invoke fear in those around them, on these things, its slightly more laughable.

My boyfriend has mentioned to me before that the city cut back on them for a while when they first came out b/c they were malfunctioning and tossing officers off of them… yikes.

I noticed the cops of segways last year and I think it’s hilarious. How could you take a cop seriously on a segway?? We saw them on Halloween last year. They got mad when I asked if they ever ran out of juice while they were in hot persuit.

Oh that’s so cool that the local police are on Segways. It’s great to see Raleigh as techno-forward- thinking and green. BTW, I saw on News 14 a few days ago that the Raleigh Segway store is in City Market, and they do tours too.
