The George Matsumoto Prize: Vote for NC’s Best Modernist House
Voting is now underway for the first inaugural George Matsumoto prize, hosted by Triangle Modernist Houses.
TMH’s inaugural Matsumoto Prize for North Carolina Modernist residential architecture is a unique competition featuring signficant cash honors, a blue-ribbon jury of internationally known architects, public voting, and an optional video component.
The Matsumoto Prize was created by TMH in honor of George Matsumoto, FAIA. Matsumoto was one of the founding faculty members of the NCSU School of Design and created some of the state’s most well-known and well-loved Modernist houses.
You can vote online via email, and the voting continues until 5PM July 22nd. Check out the list of beautiful modern NC houses and pick for your favorite!

I remember going to the School of Design library to read the latest Architectural Design magazines (the awesome UK one – possibly the best magazine ever published) while still in high school in the late 60’s. The room was the most comfortable and well lit space I’d ever sat in. I didn’t attend the design school (the students I met had an over-the-top opinion of themselves that turned me off) but I loved that space.

I was one of a small group of students who transfered from Oklahoma to Raleigh when the School of Design was started in 1948. George Matsumoto was my fourth year design professor. He practiced architecture in San Francisco for many years. He would be 90 today. His own house in Raleigh is one of his best works.
