1960s Fayetteville Street
This week’s Flashback Friday entry depicts Fayetteville Street during a time in which Raleigh’s main street underwent drastic changes.
The existence of the Tucker Building (just behind the Century Postal Station) and a few other buildings in the photo can date the photograph to within 2 years in the 1960s. Â Another clue is a barely visible sign for gas in the lower left: 31 cents a gallon. Can you guess the approximate year this photograph was taken?

I think this was taken around 1964 or 65 – I see a Mustang in the foreground which didn’t come out until that time frame.

These are fun!
Meruncc13, I agree that Mustang dates the picture to the mid-60’s, but I can remember when Thompson Cadillac moved to its current location on Old Wake Forest Road. That was in either ’67 or ’68. So, this must be late 60’s.

I agree with above posters.
The BB&T building was completed in 1965.
Thompson Cadillac moved in 1967.
Average price of gas in 1965 was 31 cents.
Has to be 1965 or 1966.
This reflects my earliest recollections of Raleigh. I remember going into the Pep Boys store, to the barbershop in the Sir Walter, and buying my school clothes at Hudson Belk.

I wasted a good portion of every algebra class in the 8th grade watching the BB&T building being built through the classroom window from Hugh Morson Jr High.

I loved that Fayetteville St. so much. Remember how well traffic flowed with four lanes as opposed to today’s two? I remember visiting the new pedestrian mall one Sunday afternoon in the 70’s. I took a date along, and after walking for a while we sat down on a bench by a fountain. This guy comes waddling up with his pants down around his ankles and asks if he can bum a smoke. I remember laughing to myself and thinking “Yeah…this new is really going to be nice”

You’ll have to excuse me if I err here… but Fayetteville Street, for several years, was host to card shows; introducing the nexts years new offerings… I remember spending hours at those, as well. Saw the first Studebaker Avante there… what a cool looking car for the era. There were also some specialty cars, customs and the like. One was the two headed Ford, as best I remembver… which also showed up in all the major and minor parades over the years. That was Fayetteville Street, right?

Sheeesh… washed my hands… can’t do a thing with them… NOT “card” shows…. CAR. OOPS :o/
