Morning View 072011
The beeping has finally stopped. I walk past this building about twice a week (It’s a downtown parking issue). Since the tornado back on April 16th the back up alarm warning has been going off, beep, beep, beep, beep …… This morning I noticed it has stopped. The condemned by the city of Raleigh sign on the building is gone and has been replaced with a for lease sign.

Where is this building located? It looks vaguely familiar. There appears to be a much older structure beneath the brick veneer and paneling. I’d like to give it a closer inspection!

Thanks for the info Bryan. My conjecture is that this uncovered structure may well be the skeletal remains of the Winters family homeplace. They were a prominent 19th-20th century African-American Raleigh family. More on this later!

Note to Bryan — went by cor. Martin and East this afternoon for closer inspection, and — the battered boards seen in your photo appear to be just another layer of veneer on the 1980s building on the corner. I guess the old Winters homeplace must be long gone. Took some pics for documentation, nonetheless.
