The Warehouses of the Depot District

I recently learned of this particular geographic area’s designation as “the Depot District”, through the announcement of the community forum set to take place today (3/30) at 5:00PM. So which is it? Depot District or Warehouse District? Warehouse seems a more apt description to me.

I usually refer to the Depot District as the immediate area surrounding The Historic Depot… incl: The Pit, Mosquito, etc. I usually refer to the larger area as The Warehouse District (including all the way up to Buckhead/Hillsborough street… and all the empty surrounding warehouses :-(

Which, by the way, I hope don’t get bulldozed, for what it’s worth. Many, many of them would work very well to be subdivided or used as creative leasing for small businesses and independent contractors who just need a few small offices and some shared resources (bathrooms, etc.).

The Downtown Raleigh Alliance formally recognizes it as Warehouse District. I believe “Depot District” is a historic designation for the actual historic train depot that Ess & Jibarra are in, and some associated buildings.

Sorta like Seaboard Station complex is technically within the DRA’s Capital District. Powerhouse Square is within the Glenwood South District; City Market is within Moore Square District. Etc, etc.

Thanks for the clarification, RaleighRob. That’s good info! Great comparison to other districts and maybe “micro-districts”, too.
