Goodnight Raleigh - a look at the art, architecture, history, and people of the city at night

Harrelson Hall by Moonlight

Contrary to semi-popular belief, Harrelson Hall was not designed by an NCSU architecture student who used the cylindrical-based building idea for his senior design project (and received in “F” for it). It was designed by Edward Waugh, a prominent Raleigh Modernist architect who was brought to the area via Henry Kamphoefner, the first dean of the College of Design.

For additional photos and commentary, see the previous post: Harrelson Hall and its Ultimate Demise.

What Used to be the Tallest Buildings in Town

In the foreground are Capital Bank Plaza and the Durham Life Insurance Building, (aka “The Superman Building“), which were at different points in time the tallest buildings in Raleigh. The Durham Life Building reigned as the tallest from the 1940s until the BB&T Building (later Capital Bank Plaza) was built in 1965. The view here is seen from what is currently the tallest building, RBC Plaza.

Joie and Cori at Deep South

Local fashion models Joie Frances and Cori Lee are regulars at Deep South. The place was hopping on a Wednesday night, full of fashion industry professionals. There is always a lively spot downtown somewhere; you just need to know where to look. Photo/article credit: Magnus Hedemark
