The Smallest Church in Raleigh
A block away from Alston Street and across from Ligon Middle School lies New Hope Holiness Church. It could very well be the smallest church in Raleigh.
I know nothing about this place, other than what was on the hand-drawn sign to the left of it: The pastor is Elizabeth Stewart, and it has the typical Sunday and Wednesday services in addition to an “Evangelistic Service” on Friday nights.

It would be interesting to see how small it is on the inside as well!

I have seen this church myself, and it is tiny! There’s another one at the corner of Alston and E. Davie St. Two other “storefront” churches this small that come to mind are the World of Faith Church at 402 Hill St and the Victory Tabernacle Church at 328 W. South St, although it has an addition on the back. Southeast Raleigh once had dozens of storefront churches such as these– until “urban renewal” came in in the 1970s and wiped most of them all out.

This church looks huge compared to the one on the corner of Lenoir and South Saunders. If you follow this link, you will see that it is not much bigger than a minivan.

But let’s not have any breaking and entering by the night crew!

Yes Shannon, that one is also on my list– Union Baptist.

Is the Union Baptist Church on South Saunders still active? I very rarely see folks coming out of this church anymore?

I think so, as they are listed in the Raleigh phone book>> I looked ’em up!

I grew up near ‘the church.’ My friends & I use to stop there on our way home from school, see it was at the time a ‘corner store.’ Penny cookies and two scoops of ice cream for .25 cents…those were the days!
Thanks for the site, I check in on my hometown often from CA.
