The Heilig-Levine Building

The former Heilig-Levine furniture store has always caught my attention when in the area around Wilmington and Hargett Streets. This building truly is one of the gems of the downtown area. Visible in Mr. Drie’s famous 1872 aerial map of Raleigh, it dates back to around 1870.

Model Shoot On Hargett Street

By a complete chance encounter, I happened upon two gentlemen with professional photography gear taking photos of someone moving mannequins and other items from an upstairs loft.

Naturally, I was interested in the absurdity of the situation. Seeing two mannquins–a torso sticking out of an engine block and one that was scantily clad while looking on was certainly something you don’t see every day.
