This week for Flashback Friday we feature this beautifully tinted postcard of Faircloth Hall. The dormitory was built on the old Meredith College campus on Blount St. in 1909. Faircloth Hall was brand new when this postcard was mailed in 1910.
Where The Wild Styles Are
Over the weekend, passing motorists on Beryl Road may have noticed a large mural on the back of a business facing Hillsborough Street. Three artists painted an incredibly large scene depicting Maurice Sendak’s characters from Where The Wild Things Are.
The building where the future Union Station would live
On October 11th, Raleigh citizens will elect a new mayor, City Council representatives, a new school board, and vote on two bond referenda. One of these referenda is a $40 million bond for transportation improvements. At the center of this bond is $3 million to build the proposed Union Station in the Warehouse District.
Few things have the ability to affect a city in a positive way as improvements to transportation and infrastructure. It is because of this I encourage you to join me in voting YES on the referendum.
I love the message on this postcard — “Bunk here tonight. A fairly good hotel.” Actually the famed Yarborough House was Raleigh’s premier lodging and social gathering spot from its establishment in the 1850s until its destruction by fire in 1928.
